Curator's Notes

For fresh and fruity springtime flavors, there's nothing like a natural Ethiopian-- and this time of year, Coava’s Kilenso Mokonissa is a perpetual favorite. Sweet, punchy aromas of wild blueberries, florals and a subtle note of rum make it love at first sniff. Brewed up, the body is buttery and smooth like heavy cream, with deep, slightly wild notes of rum cake and cantaloupe melon, nutty almond biscotti, grape jam, maybe a touch of sticky marmalade. Light, effervescent finish of lavender florals. We can hear the birds singing already.

Roaster's Notes

Kilenso Mokonissa is one of the smallest villages in the Borena Hagermariam District of Sidama. In the past the coffees coming from Kilenso would have been blended into larger lots and sold under the areas catch all name Ardi. The farmers there use organic practices (though they can't all afford to be certified) so as to not waste anything they produce. Natural process, with notes of lavender and grape jam, with hints of marmalade, dark rum, and almond biscotti.

"I am not a big fan of blueberry and I could definitely taste it in this coffee. Goes well with lemon cake!"

"I tried this as a french press and a couple weeks later in an aeropress. Like a lot of lighter roasts it was better after sitting for a bit and the aeropress was incredible. It is very syrupy, fruity and buttery and there certainly is a hint of lavendar in there. The acidity is very easy on the palate without being tart and makes for an outstanding Ethiopian"

"I didn't enjoy it as much the second time around. It's possible that the beans are slightly different because the flavor notes on the bag in the picture are different than the one I got. It wasn't as fruity as I like my Ethiopian coffees. "

"From the first grind of amazing wild blueberries...ahh so beautiful. The taste of grape jam lightly balancing with melon. If you haven’t tried this Ethiopian order it now!"

"Did not expect to like this one -- I mean, really-- lavender and grape jam? I put off trying it because I thought I would just hate it, but I was wrong. I love being proved wrong. Totally odd flavors for coffee but they worked! Little bit of old school breakfast in a cup of coffee, hints of grape jam. I like creamer in my coffee, but tried this one black and it had a tiny bit of natural sweetness to it, would recommend trying it. "

"I did not expect to like this one but I did -- flavors of lavender and grape jam did not appeal to me at all, but it wasn't bad at all. Slightly sweet, went very well with creamer. Great going out of my comfort zone and trying something new!"
