Bean Box Breakdown

Hark! Let’s brew something dark! We taste rich chocolate-walnut fudge in this blend, and a spicy, starry complexity from the addition of a rare Indonesian Sulawesi. It will not do to say of night, since dark is what brings out your light.

Fundamental Coffee Company Story

2017 is our fourth edition of Winter Solstice. This year’s blend features a very rare and special coffee from Indonesia, namely a Sulawesi coffee grown by small holders in the tiny Toraja region, as well as a Sumatra Mandheling, Guatemala Huehuetenango, and Colombia Huila.

In the cup, the blend may be described as a complex, full-bodied combination of herbal and assertive Indonesian coffees with a round pleasing aftertaste of roasted walnuts and dark chocolate. It is a dense and complex coffee blend enjoyable in a French Press, pourover or high quality automatic drip maker like the Moccamaster.

"Brewed in a percalator. I don’t love an oily coffee so this was hard to drink black. Paired very nice with a seasonal spiced cream but it is not something I would drink black which is normally how I drink my morning coffee. "

"Delicious - dark and chocolatey with a little bit of walnut-y oiliness (used aeropress inverted method)"

"This coffee didn't sound fantastic at first to me, but once I tried it, I was pleasantly surprised! Much better through a drip than through french press in my opinion."

"I wasn't sure about the herbal and pine notes, but it works very well! I served it with a dash of egg nog and cream and it was a hit over the holidays! "

"This one didn’t stand out for me. It was darker than what I like to drink and was smooth relative to a Starbucks, but didn’t stand out."

"Pretty good my boyfriend dislikes dark roast normally but didn’t mind this one."

"A great dark blend! Lighter taste than most dark roasts I have tried and it has a chocolatey aftertaste. Really liked this one!!"

"this was some amazing coffee, it was surprisingly smooth for a dark roast. I would like a slightly coarser grind, so the brew doesn’t become too harsh"

"LOVE! One of my favorites so far... Sooo good as a french press!! Dark and delicious. First large bag in my subscription, hoping the next ones are just as good or better. This is a MUST try for coffee lovers."

"I LOVE THIS COFFEE! I have reordered this 4 times and I'm sad that this year's edition is coming to an end. The coffee is smooth and deep and the nutty and chocolate undertones are wonderful. I hope next year's blend is this good!"

"Darker than I typically enjoy in my cup, but smooth. Not too acidic, dark chocolate flavor. If you’re a dark roast lover, you’ll like this!"

"This is a very dark, smooth blend. I was hoping to pick out some of the tasting notes, but they didn't come through. Brewed with a v60."

"This was a nice, dark coffee. We made it a bit too light in a new french press to get all the notes , but it was still good. "

"This was our first bag and it was very goood! dark roast and delicious "

"I loved this coffee. Just be aware that you are purchasing a very dark roast and you won't be disappointed."

"Stood out to me as being too dark. I did not really love it."

"Good winter coffee. Intensely dark; perfect for the cold weather where we are located. Would recommend to others that like darker brews. If they like all thing dark-coffee, chocolate, beer- they will love it. "

"This coffee was surprisingly smooth for a dark roast. I would recommend a slightly coarser grind, so the brew doesn’t become too bitter."

"french pressed this coffee and it was so smooth and delicious. Even went over well with people who don't like dark roasted coffee. Loved the little bit of spice in the coffee, perfect with the chocolate."
