“Seriously? I dreamed I washed all the dishes? Lamest dream ever.”

Allie Smith

Mornings are a peaceful start to the controlled chaos of the day, and centered on the ritual of a great cup of coffee.

§ What time do you get to sleep? What time do you wake up?
I’m a naturally early riser, so I tend to fall asleep before 10:30 and get up between 6-6:30. I never use an alarm (unless I need to wake up for an early morning flight).
§ What do you dream about?
My nighttime dreams are rather mundane. There have been times when I’ve woken up and been like, “seriously? I dreamed that I washed all the dishes? Lamest dream ever."
§ What’s the first thing you do once you’re awake?
The very first thing I do in the morning is walk to the kitchen and prepare my morning coffee.
§ What morning ritual do you have that’s sacred to starting your day off right?
My morning coffee is my ritual. I sit alone on the couch, in the stillness of the morning and sip my coffee.
§ What one possession/object is essential to your morning?
A warm coffee mug. I have a few favorites that I use.
§ With whom do you spend your mornings?
I start off slowly by myself (and the cats who demand to be fed) and then am joined by my preschooler with her army of stuffed animals and plush blankets. Everything turns to controlled chaos at that time.
§ What do you eat for breakfast?
I should improve my breakfast habits! I’m often not hungry in the morning and will nibble on whatever is available.
§ What kind of coffee do you drink in the morning, and how do you prepare it?
I’m currently drinking Piu coffee which my foreign exchange student’s family shipped to me from Belgium. They are coffee importers so I have a perfect morning cup of Italian/Belgian coffee. I use a drip coffee machine in the morning as I can’t be trusted to operate my espresso machine before 7 am...
§ What’s the one upgrade you wish you could add to your morning?
I would upgrade my morning routine to leaving my phone in Airplane Mode and sitting in purposeful silence for 15 minutes (AKA meditate).
§ What do you consider the end of your morning?
When the stuffed animal parade led by a grouchy preschooler enters the room, MY morning has ended.
