A mostly reformed night owl, Maryna's mornings are all about centering for the day ahead.

§ What time do you get to sleep? What time do you wake up?
I'm a semi-reformed night owl so I have to make it a point to get to bed before midnight. Tea helps... the only time of the day I ever drink tea! Wake up is around 8am and I like to try to wake naturally, without an alarm. The earlier I go to bed, the more likely this becomes.
§ What do you dream about?
I'll recall the emotions I felt during a dream, but rarely the contents of the dreams themselves. It would be fun to keep a dream journal someday... what would they reveal?? Do coffee beans dream of caffeinated sheep?
§ What’s the first thing you do once you’re awake?
Before I get out of bed, I try to mentally set my day in order. Having a plan to meet my goals makes me feel confident and centered.
§ What morning ritual do you have that’s sacred to starting your day off right?
I feel strongly about building a sense of calm into my morning. I hate a rush. My husband is often up and out before I am, but he always makes me coffee before he leaves-- by the time I'm up, it's hot and ready. I always feel taken care of when I find coffee waiting, and I know it's been made with love. My quiet time with my coffee is my version of meditating: I'm alone and I can focus on my thoughts.
§ What one possession/object is essential to your morning?
I would say my morning coffee, but perhaps it's really the notes I find from my husband near the coffee. He's a morning person, and excited to rush out the door and begin his day. I'm glad we've found a way to connect first thing in the morning, even if we don't see each other before work. It reminds me of why we work so hard.
§ With whom do you spend your mornings?
I'm often alone with just our two cats. On the weekends I spend the time with my (early birds) husband and stepson, and things get a bit more boisterous.
§ What do you eat for breakfast?
I eat the same thing every morning: a mixture of greek yogurt, frozen blueberries, rolled oats, and almonds, with a little honey. I call it "yogurt surprise". If we go out for brunch, I'm a bloody mary type of girl.
§ What kind of coffee do you drink in the morning, and how do you prepare it?
It's a great surprise to discover which Bean Box coffee my husband has brewed for me in the morning. Since we take home extras, it could be just about anything. If I had to pick a favorite, it's anything with chocolate or cocoa in the tasting notes. I'm partial to a pour over, and we have an otto-matic chemex, which makes it easy.
§ What’s the one upgrade you wish you could add to your morning?
I like doing crosswords so maybe I'd add a New York Times newspaper delivered to the doorstep (what a luxury here in Seattle!) When I wasn't working full-time, I enjoyed a run every morning. Now, I save the runs for the weekends.
§ What do you consider the end of your morning?
The final step to my morning is putting on my makeup. Once I feel put-together, I'm ready to "face" the day.
