“I dream of returning to Venezuela one day and restarting my family’s coffee farm.”

Oscar J Rivero Paparoni

Proud coffee farmer from Venezuela • Seattle, WA

Today Oscar is working on his MBA, but he dreams of returning to Venezuela and living life as a coffee farmer.

§ What time do you get to sleep? What time do you wake up?
Depending on the day, and how much work I have, I go to bed between 11:00pm and 12:30am. Right now, I wake up around 8:30-9:00 am because I’m an MBA student at University of Washington, Foster School of Business, but back when I was working on my grandfather’s coffee farm, I used to wake up at 6:00am to go check the coffee crops.
§ What do you dream about?
I dream of returning to my home country one day and restarting operations on my family’s coffee farm, producing the best coffee in the country and being part of rebuilding the economy there.
§ What’s the first thing you do once you’re awake?
My sister lives in Madrid and my parents live in Caracas, which are 9 hours and 3 hours ahead of Seattle respectively, so when I wake up, I usually check my phone and almost always have a message from my sister or my mom.
§ What morning ritual do you have that’s sacred to starting your day off right?
Right after talking to my family, which is almost always the first thing I do in the mornings, I jump in the shower and then prepare some coffee. Without that cup of coffee, it’s very difficult to start my mornings with the right amount of energy.
§ What one possession/object is essential to your morning?
I can’t leave home without a watch on my wrist.
§ With whom do you spend your mornings?
Here in Seattle, my girlfriend. Back on the coffee farm, it used to be Eladio, my grandfather’s right hand who oversaw pretty much all of the harvesting process. We used to have breakfast together in the truck, on our way to the coffee crops deep in the mountains.
§ What do you eat for breakfast?
Eladio’s wife prepares the best empanadas in the world. But here in Seattle, my girlfriend and I usually prepare scrambled eggs with chives, bacon and avocado.
§ What kind of coffee do you drink in the morning, and how do you prepare it?
I drink my coffee black. On weekdays, I use a french press, but on the weekends, when I have more time to prepare my coffee, I use a Chemex and brew small batch coffee from different Seattle Roasters.
§ What’s the one upgrade you wish you could add to your morning?
I really want a dog, so I would add a morning dog walk, although I’m not sure how much I would enjoy those walks during the rainy Seattle winter mornings.
§ What do you consider the end of your morning?
Right now, while I am an MBA student, I consider the end of my mornings when I finish my first class of the day. Back on the coffee farm, I considered the end of my morning once we had harvested and processed the first batches of coffee before lunch time.
