§ What time do you get to sleep? What time do you wake up?
I go to bed around 11pm every night. I set my alarm to wake up at 6am every morning during the week so I can get some exercise before work. However, with a new baby and a 3yr old I occasionally sleep in to 6:45am to combat my growing sleep deficit.
§ What do you dream about?
I dream about getting Bean Box in front of millions of coffee lovers, getting lost on my way to class in college (… still having this dream 12 yrs later), and vacation with the beautiful Susie Fritzky (my wife).
§ What’s the first thing you do once you’re awake?
I give my self space to think freely. On mornings when I’m up at 6am, I head straight downstairs to workout. I usually do some combination of strength training and running for 45 minutes. If I slept in, I head right into the shower. Both are essential to waking up and getting my brain moving in the right direction (more below). Another note: I keep my phone on airplane mode so I’m not tempted to jump in to text messages, emails from Matthew Berk, and about 5 other kinds of notifications my phone doles out when I wake up. I usually turn it off airplane mode when I’m driving to work.
§ What morning ritual do you have that’s sacred to starting your day off right?
The two most important rituals of my morning are working out and taking a shower. I have to do one to start the day. They give my mind time for two things: 1)thinking more creatively about goals at work and 2) teeing up 2-3 tasks/wins that will make the day feel like a success. My brain has started doing this almost subconsciously over the last three years. I would guess because both activities are relaxing and free of distractions.
§ What one possession/object is essential to your morning?
Audiobooks and podcasts have been a game changer for me. I’m mentally drained in the evenings so running in the morning and listening to a book or podcast has been a great way to learn and kick start my day with a little inspiration. I subscribe to Libro.fm for audiobooks. The Magic of Thinking Big is my current listen.
§ With whom do you spend your mornings?
Right before I head out the door I talk with Susie about the day and am greeted with smiles from our little people, Blake and Isla (3 yrs and 8 months old). While brief, this is without a doubt my favorite part of the morning.
§ What do you eat for breakfast?
An apple on my drive in to work. If I’m really hungry, I’ll have two or grab a Larabar. Apple’s are filling, sweet, healthy, and mobile. What more can you ask for? On the weekends, I’ll have oatmeal, avocado toast, or peanut butter and apple slices on toast.
§ What kind of coffee do you drink in the morning, and how do you prepare it?
During the week my first coffee is usually a Chemex at work. I prefer to start off my day with a nice balanced medium roast. Herkimer’s Drip Blend and Conduit’s Westlake Blend come to mind. On weekends, Susie and I enjoy a pot of coffee out of our Breville Grind Control Coffee Maker. It’s not hipster approved but has an attached burr grinder and makes a great pot while Susie and I focus on our little family.
§ What’s the one upgrade you wish you could add to your morning?
Working out every morning. This requires more nights of uninterrupted sleep. We’re getting there!
§ What do you consider the end of your morning?
9am. By then I’m out of my bubble and everyone else is at Bean Box. I’ve gone from free thinking and planning to working on the 2 or 3 wins of the day.
