What's the best coffee for lattes?

As always, it's fun to try a range of coffees to see what you prefer. Traditionally, medium-dark roasts are a better compliment to milk. This roast profile brings out more chocolate, toffee, caramel, and nut tasting notes which will no doubt be delicious in your homemade latte. Many of Bean Box's coffee roasters have uniquely crafted blends for espresso with these tasting notes. You can also try single origin coffees from Colombia, Guatemala, and Brazil which tend to provide a great base for espresso. We are seeing more of our roasters experiment with lighter roasts for their house espresso. Lighter roasts under pressure really shine with wild and vibrant tasting notes can range from earthy cucumber to fruit forward tangerine notes. It's really worth trying a shot of a lighter roast or in an Americano where you can appreciate the coffee by itself. However, with milk I would still guide you towards a medium-dark roast profile where the combination is delicious. The latte is first and foremost a milk drink, so the body needs to stand up to the froth. For this I generally recommend medium blends, specifically heavier in Latin American beans, and formulated for espresso (read: yielding good coffee crema under pressure). Look for taste notes that include chocolate and caramel.

There's a trend in many coffee shops these days to feature single origin coffees as espresso drinks, but many of these don't necessarily make for great lattes, as specific flavor peaks can interrupt the overall smooth taste and texture sensations of a classic latte.
